TRANSPORT INTERESTS

As an MP, I set up the All-Party Parliamentary Freight Transport Group becoming its first chair.  The aim of the Group was to bring Parliamentarians together with businesses and organisations from all parts of the freight Industry. The Group’s objective was to explore issues impacting on this essential sector and to provide a forum for raising the profile of freight transport within Parliament.


Through the APPG, I produced a report on the barriers to employment across the freight sector, with particular reference to young people, and another report on the impact of building a Eurotunnel interchange north of London. 


Under the auspices of the Parliamentary Group I brought together the Road Rescue & Recovery trade bodies to foster collaborative working across the subsector. 


Through the Group I worked to create fruitful partnerships across the freight industry between large and small companies and improved access for these businesses to Members of Parliament.


The Road Rescue & Recovery industry recognised my contribution to their sector with an award at the TOW SHOW annual dinner in September 2013.


I also supported Authorised Testing Facility businesses with their concerns about the implementation of the DVSA’s Next Generation vehicle testing programme.  A programme which saw private testing facilities owned and operated by the industry conducting tests on bus, coach and HGVs.


In Autumn 2016, with the support of the Road Haulage Association I visited The Jungle refugee camp in Calais to see first-hand the situation for the refugees, the local residents and the hauliers.



In recognition of my activities and extensive knowledge of the freight industry I was made a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in 2016.



In July 2015 I was elected onto the Transport Select Committee of the House of Commons.  I was extremely active on the committee, seeking and securing enquiries into Skills Shortages in the Road Freight Sector, All-Lane Running, and Operation Stack (a procedure used by Kent Police and the Port of Dover in England to park (or "stack") lorries on the M20 motorway in Kent when services across the English Channel, such as those through the Channel Tunnel or from the Port of Dover, are disrupted, for example by bad weather, industrial action, fire or derailments in the tunnel).


I also ensured that issues affecting the freight transport industry were regularly and repeatedly raised by the Committee with Ministers.  I spoke out on issues such as the Zafira Fires controversy, VW emissions testing scandal and the impact of cycle lanes on congestion.


Having successfully argued for a review of the All-Lane Running programme, I ensured the justified fears of the vehicle recovery industry and its operators were heard.



I entered into a number of fruitful relationships with significant players in the sector. Logistics company DHL gave him unrestricted access to its in-house and outsourced marketing experts as well as enabling him to discuss future logistics trends at its Cologne Innovation Centre. Closer to home I was also afforded valuable insights into DHL's logistics operations at East Midlands Airport and Heathrow.


Similarly, Associated British Ports enabled me to learn about their operations at their ports on the Humber and in Southampton. This valuable experience of major port operations widened my understanding of the freight industry. 


I also visited supermarket chain Tesco’s Grocery Distribution Centre at the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal learning about its business operations and the role of logistics in its business models. I also worked alongside staff at BAE Systems gaining valuable insights.


On the floor of the House and in Committee I regularly raised issues of importance to the freight sector.
